P21 is pleased to announce the inauguration of its establishment with 《Origin, Originality》, a solo exhibition by Choi Jeong Hwa (b.1961), a celebrated international artist based in Korea. P21, a gallery dedicated to contemporary art created in present day by mid-career and emerging artists, is located in the heart of Seoul, Itaewon disctrict.

Installed in two separate storefront cubes, Choi Jeong Hwa’s new works conceived for this exhibition respond to the gallery’s unique space. Known for his large-scale installations made of everyday objects—in particular those in plastic--Choi has once again convened the sacred symbols of 21st century consumerism for P21’s window galleries.

The new works are made up of a melange of miscellaneous objects from both the East and West, facing the passersby of Gyeongnidan-gil road. Objects such as gourd bowls, jegi (bowls used for ancestral rites), candlesticks, spoons, jars, buckets, pots, stone, old tires, buoys, rope, totems, and plastic lids that have lost their functional value are reassembled into strange landscapes that draw out an unfamiliar tenderness. The objects, which each functioned in distinct realms, congregate to unfold a window into the miscellany of the contemporary world.
