A concept design for the BYR light project © Kim Heejo

A Lounge, located within Aiden Cheongdam Hotel, is Korea’s first gallery dedicated to contemporary art, presenting works by leading Korean artists while also functioning as a complex cultural space where visitors can enjoy casual dining, craft beer, and various events and performances.

BYR Light Project is a permanent lighting installation installed on the ceiling of the VIP Private Dining Room (PDR) on the third floor of A Lounge, and marks my first light-based project. Expanding the BYR system [Blue–Yellow–Red] into light, the blue line moves along the boundary of a square structure symbolizing the human, the yellow line bends and flows like the rhythm of nature, and the red line curves around the room like the energy of the universe. While the three lights do not overlap, they are connected as a single diagram, quietly drawing a “structure of relationships” above the space where dining and conversation take place.

Under standard lighting, the functional aspects of the space are more apparent; however, when only the BYR lighting is activated, the atmosphere of the room shifts into an entirely different dimension. The lines on the ceiling are not merely decorative, but function as a schema that is continuously reinterpreted through the movements and gaze of those within the space. In this way, BYR Light Project transforms an everyday lounge and dining room into a subtle field of contemplation where human, nature, and universe intersect through a minimal structure of light.
