Children’s author Hwang Sunmi, design critic Choi Bum, Wang Giseok—director of the Jeongeupsa Traditional Music Ensemble—along with the International Cultural Exchange Association for the Disabled and the Wise Ballet Theater, will receive the Presidential Commendation at the Korean Culture and Arts Awards.
 
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 20th that a total of thirteen recipients, including those mentioned above, have been selected for the 49th Korean Culture and Arts Awards. Hwang Sunmi, a professor in the Department of Creative Writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts, is widely known as the author of the children’s book The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly.

Choi Bum, a former editor-in-chief of Monthly Design, is a critic who lectures on design theory at several universities. Wang Giseok is a designated holder of Pansori, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 2 of Jeollabuk-do. All recipients will receive a Presidential Commendation along with a prize of 10 million KRW.
 
Eight individuals have been selected for the “Today’s Young Artist Award,” including poet Park Joon; painter Son Donghyun; Yang Ji Woon, head of Jiwoon; architect Yoo Sorae, director of Nameless Architecture; pianist Yekwon Sunwoo; Heo Changyeol, head of Cheonhajeil Mask Workshop; Lee Kyungsung, director of Creative VaQi; and Ji Kyungmin, head of Goblin Party. Each will receive a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism along with a prize of 5 million KRW.
 
The award ceremony will be held on the 21st at 2 p.m. in the Multi-Project Hall on the basement level of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul.
