UARTSPACE opens Lee Eunsil’s solo exhibition 《Press the Button!》 from April 10th to May 11th as the first one of 2019. Lee Eunsil actively utilizes techniques and materials of traditional Korean paintings in order to express a human instinct of ‘desire.’ It captures the artist’s experiences honestly by revealing the reality of human sexual desires, frustrated desires, shameful desires, and primitive desires.

Scene of Desire shows a group of tigers, a symbol of power and authority, are dynamically moving while blindly pursuing the unbounded desires with golden hairs on their bodies. As the tigers bustle around the forest with their faces down, the reality of desire is not directly manifested but felt through shimmering patterns of the hairs.

On the right side of the painting, the stone pillars figuratively represented by the shapes of male and female sexual organs give rise to various questions. Each type of artificial genitals which consist of soft but strong hairs indicates an excessive desire and fantasy for larger and strong forces.

In the work BIONIC PENIS, PRESS THE BUTTON!, the huge artificial penis of the tiger baldly gazes at the screen. There is an operation button to enlarge it, which suggests the tiger in the middle is the most powerful one among the herds. This demonstrates the power-oriented reality to flaunt our own greed and desire of excess even through artificial means. When looking into the superficial world in detail, we find out false and fake desires which stem from feelings of being shabby, cowardly, and shameful.

In the Night presents a room full of sexual desire where both a man and a woman are tangled in bed. In contrast to the serene landscape outside the window where the darkness deepened, human beings covered with long and thin hairs concentrate on an act of instinct. The subjects depicted as a beast appear to be mating animals as if they speak for our primitive desires.

The artist Lee Eunsil frankly discloses how the various experiences she had were defined, oppressed, and dominated by the social frame. She pays attention to the aspects of the distorted and perverted desires due to the abnormal social structures while drawing freely the tabooed desires on the canvas.
