《META PICS》 is a mixed word with ‘META’ and ‘PICS’. ‘META’ means ‘Picture about
Pictures’, and ‘PICS’ is an abbreviation of ‘Pictures’, including ‘Photos’ and
‘Images’. By the early 20th century, the camera acted as a tool to represent a
real life and the photo was considered as a substitute for an actual object.
For the reasons, the photos replaced a representational duty of a painting;
however, the photos of present-day no longer remain as a record of visible
things but is firmly settled into a genre of contemporary art as ‘New Medium’
to express artistic idea and imagination. And besides, according to the
development of computer and digital technology, the handling of images became
freer, and the photos keep evolving as the advanced medium to express and
re-interpret the changes of the complex times.
In this respect, the artworks of
six artists from the 《META PICS》
exhibition reveal a strategy and methology of a photo, covering works from
Staight Photo to manipulated images by high technology. So, the exhibition
provides a good opportunity to examine the position of a photo on the timeline
of Photograph as Contemporary Art.
