Dongwha Pharmaceutical (CEO Yoo Junho) announced that it will hold 《The 8th Summer Saeng-Saek》, an exhibition presenting works that reinterpret the beauty of Korea’s traditional folding fan (jeopseon, 摺扇) in a contemporary way. The exhibition will take place from June 1 to June 12 at Insa Art Center.

《The Summer Saeng-Saek》 is an exhibition of works by finalists of the “Gasong Art Award,” established to discover and support emerging artists and to preserve traditional culture.

The 2023 Gasong Art Award targeted artists under the age of 49 with at least one solo or group exhibition within the past three years. Applications were accepted in two categories: a collaboration category with fan craftsmen and a theme category centered on “jeopseon (folding fan).” Finalists were selected through a first-round portfolio review and a second-round in-depth interview. Based on the completed works, final winners for the Grand Prize, Excellence Award, and Collaboration Award were selected on June 1. The three final awardees receive prize money and trophies.

This year’s finalists include a total of ten artists: Lili Lee, ADHD, Seo Jihye, Sujin Moon, Kim Minho, Lee Woongchul, Jung Heejung, Choi Heejung, as well as Kim Dasul and Lee Kyungmin in the collaboration category. Artists in the jeopseon-themed category presented works that reinterpret folding fans in a contemporary context, while those in the collaboration category worked together with Kim Daeseok, Korea’s only master of folding fan craftsmanship.

The exhibition is held across the main exhibition hall on the first floor and the second exhibition hall on the second floor of Insa Art Center.

The exhibition can also be enjoyed remotely through an online exhibition tour video and a VR exhibition hall available on the official website (www.dongwhaart.co.kr).

The exhibition title “Summer Saeng-Saek” is derived from the proverb, “The pride of summer is a fan, and the pride of winter is a calendar (鄕中生色 夏扇冬曆).” This fan exhibition, which began in 2011 with the aim of enhancing the artistic value and popularization of Korea’s traditional folding fan (jeopseon), has now reached its 8th edition.
