Technology and society have made it possible for individuals to live alone without discomfort. Moreover, constraints and limitations, which have now become unavoidable conditions of life, accelerate the formation of individualized ways of living. Within these changes, the encounter between the viewer and the artwork also reveals a tendency in which the ‘individual’ is increasingly reinforced—as both the subject and unit of appreciation, and as a creator.

《Selfish Art-Viewer: Today’s Appreciation》 looks back on the exhibition environment that artists, curators, and viewers face today. Centering on the experiences of exhibition and creation, as well as viewing and ownership, it reconstructs the modes of presentation of works by 16 artists. Through this process, ‘individualization’ expands into related concepts such as independence, isolation, selfishness, taste, ownership, and uniqueness.

The key term of this exhibition, ‘selfish,’ is not simply used as an adjective meaning ‘self-centered,’ but rather functions to paradoxically reflect the conditions of creation and viewing today, while also indicating an attempt to focus on each individual’s distinctiveness and personal attitude within a reality saturated with numerous constraints and regulations.

《Selfish Art-Viewer: Today’s Appreciation》 expects that each individual, who creates and views in autonomous ways, will operate as a ‘selfish art-viewer,’ and that together we may consider the questions faced by artists, curators, and viewers today, as well as new ways of forming relationships.
