DOOSAN Gallery Seoul presents Park Meena’s exhibition 《Drawings 1998–2012》 from August 30 to September 27. This exhibition will feature over 300 works selected from 785 drawings that the artist has produced over the past fifteen years, from 1998 to the present in 2012.

Through continuous questioning and experimentation regarding the essence of painting, Park Meena expands the domain of painting by exploring new ways of reading it rather than approaching it as a form of traditional representation. By collecting, investigating, and researching colors, she establishes her own chromatic system and expresses it in her work.

She has also attempted to shift conventional systems of perception through paintings based on “anagrams,” which create new words by rearranging the positions of letters, as well as through works using “dingbats,” special pictographic characters used in computer typography. The drawing series presented in this exhibition consists of unique works that utilize children’s coloring books—an educational activity governed by specific rules and systems—as their basis.

Instead of following the original instructional framework of the coloring pages, Park Meena transforms them into paintings governed by her own meticulous system by overlaying drawings, attaching stickers, or filling the images with exaggerated colors. The more than 300 works presented in this exhibition provide an opportunity to view the artist’s drawing series from the early stages of her practice to the present in one place.
