The Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (SOMA), operated by the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation and directed by Hwang Yong-pil, holds an annual open call to support innovative and capable artists while continually foregrounding drawing as an artistic issue. Through this process, exhibitions of the final selected artists are presented under the title 《Into Drawing》. This year’s program features three solo exhibitions by artists selected through the 2017 Drawing Center open call.

The first exhibition of the year, 《Into Drawing 36》, on view from June 8 to June 24, presents Yona Lee’s installation works composed of everyday objects under the subtitle “Gradually Slower and Softer, Gradually Disappearing (Perdendosi).” The suspended everyday objects—familiar items encountered in daily life—resemble musical notes placed upon a staff, forming music. In this way, they acquire artistic meaning in and of themselves while also raising questions about the boundary between everyday objects and art.

Through this exhibition, SOMA seeks to reconsider the idea that objects displayed in the museum may be understood as artworks that are three-dimensionally “drawn” upon the canvas of the museum space itself. This exhibition may also be viewed together with the museum’s main exhibition, 《DISCOMFORT ON PURPOSE》.
