The two-person exhibition 《Balance》 by Hyunmo Yang and Heejoon Lee was held at Art Space Young from May 20 (Thu) to June 13 (Sun).

The exhibition title “Balance” refers to equilibrium, indicating both a particular state and the relationship between objects. In this exhibition, balance becomes the axis and reference point through which the two artists reflect on their painterly concerns and their artistic relationship. The project was conceived around each artist’s contemplation of balance within painting and its relation to the world beyond painting.

Hyunmo Yang reflects on how to deal with oversaturated forms and images. He believes that his life is surrounded by excessive forms and images that appear and disappear abruptly, move at speed through media, and possess abstracted and unstable meanings. Within this overwhelming visual flow, Yang focuses on a sense of lost direction. In response, he attempts to find visual balance through painting, presenting abstract works that regulate the proportion between figuration and non-figuration, and foregrounding “empty space” within the pictorial field.

Heejoon Lee, meanwhile, has continued experimenting with the theme of cities and architecture over the past several years, combining photomontage techniques with the language of abstract painting. He considers how architectural environments shape individual perception and thought, conducting multifaceted formal experiments. His recent work Image Architect reflects on how his thinking responds to architectural settings found throughout urban spaces.

The exhibition 《Balance》 at Art Space Young served as a space for the two artists to share painterly inquiries that have continued since 2015. Moving between balance and tension, the exhibition became an occasion to discuss the sustainability of their practices moving forward.
