The Artist © Bahc Yiso

Bahc Yiso (45) has been selected as the 2002 recipient of the ‘Hermès Foundation Missulsang’, presented annually by the French company Hermès Korea.

Following Younghae Chang in 2000 and KIM Beom in 2001, the selection of Bahc Yiso clearly reinforces the award’s identity as one that recognizes artists with strong experimental approaches and compelling messages. The jury (chaired by Song Mi-Sook) stated that Bahc was chosen because he “has drawn attention at major international biennales for his unconventional modes of conceptual transmission, as well as his provocative and experimental use of scale and materials.”

At his solo exhibition held last year at ‘Alternative Space Pool’ in Gwanhun-dong, Seoul, Bahc gained notice for unfolding his personal experience of having lived through the era of the ‘Saemaul Movement’ in a manner inscribed directly onto the body. Objects associated with ‘modernization’—such as checkered vinyl flooring, plywood panels, plastic tarps, and stacks of boxes—evoked layered associations, offering viewers both humor and moments of critical awakening.

“I am primarily interested in expressing a sense of respect for everything in the world that is clumsy, useless, or weak,” Bahc said. “I am also drawn to our sense of helplessness as we struggle through everyday life governed by unknowability and misunderstanding, and to the shabbiness of grand achievements produced through great effort. I like the sense of liberation that comes with temporariness, and the breathing room that arises when things don’t quite fit together.

Along with these feelings, I see my work as an attempt to visualize a loose and lukewarm sense of affirmation toward both ‘reality’ and ‘art.’ Ultimately, I hope that my works will create a neighborhood that is ambiguous yet enjoyable—one in which the ridiculous and the serious coexist.”

He added that he is interested in “silly jokes and refreshing yawns, skewed angles and sounds that drift sideways, or the echoes of awkwardness and emptiness.”

Bahc Yiso was previously more widely known under the name Mo Bahc. He explained his decision to change his name to Bahc Yiso by saying, “Because I often appeared anonymously in newspapers and broadcasts, and people tended to speculate that the name carried some deep meaning.”

Along with a commemorative plaque and a prize of 20 million won, Bahc will hold a celebratory exhibition from October 24 through November 3 at Gallery Hyundai in Sagan-dong, Seoul.
