The city of Ansan (Mayor Lee Min-geun) and the Ansan Foundation for Arts and Culture (CEO Lee Sungwoon) present the 25th Danwon Art Festival Selected Artists Exhibition 《Here, Encounter》 from October 1 (Tue) to November 10 (Sun) at Hall 1 of Kimhongdo Art Museum.

Established in 1999 to honor the artistic spirit and legacy of Danwon Kim Hongdo, the Danwon Art Festival has served as a major art competition in Korea. Since 2015, the festival has shifted its focus from “artwork submissions” to “artist-based selection,” supporting emerging artists each year through a range of follow-up programs.

This year’s open call attracted 407 applicants, and through two rounds of evaluation by art professionals—including critics, artists, professors, art directors, and editors—eleven artists were selected for their artistic potential and creative vision: Kang Seunghye, Kim Beomjoon, Kim Jungok, Noh Eunyoung, Sung Pilha, Shin Yejin, Ahn Jongwoo, Joo Hyeongjoon, Choi Eunjung, Choi Hyeyeon, and Han Sohee.

The exhibition showcases diverse themes and media, uniting them under the title 《Here, Encounter》 to reflect on the meaning and value of the festival itself. Historically, the “Salon” of Paris served as a gateway for artists, shaping the city’s identity as a global center of art and culture. The Danwon Art Festival, founded in a similar spirit, continues this legacy as a publicly supported exhibition platform, introducing Ansan as the “city of Danwon” and a “city of culture.” Now in its 25th year, the festival looks ahead to a new phase of growth.

The title “Here” combined with the mathematical symbol “∞” highlights the infinite artistic possibilities rooted in the museum that bears Danwon’s name. The selected artists’ works embody youthful experimentation and fresh interpretation, signaling the festival’s ongoing evolution.

During the exhibition period, two awards will be given: the Danwon Grand Prize (₩30,000,000 acquisition award) and the Sista Award (the Citizens’ Choice Award). In addition, as part of the festival’s continued support programs, the 2023 Grand Prize winner Choi Ji-hyun will present her solo exhibition 《有無無有_Being or Not Being》 at the SangSang Art Factory.

Goo Jaseung, director of the festival committee, remarked: “This year’s Danwon Art Festival received an unprecedented number of applicants, reaffirming its role in discovering emerging artists and showcasing innovative work. We hope this exhibition becomes a new milestone for the festival’s future.”
