The solo exhibition 《Black Bones, Heart and Gemstones》 by Soojung Jung is held at A-Lounge from December 12, 2023 to January 3, 2024. All works on view are paintings on canvas — a total of eleven new works created after the artist’s solo presentation at FRIEZE SEOUL in September 2023.

The exhibited works revolve around the central motif of the “witch.” Drawing inspiration from anecdotes of witches that appear in historical records and fictional narratives alike, Jung freely arranges on the canvas various figures of witches with diverse gestures, poses, and expressions, along with the animals and objects that populate witch tales.

Throughout her career, Soojung Jung has consistently depicted women. From frolicking female nymphs to powerful female villains radiating intense energy, and the portrait series inspired by 17th-century Dutch tronie paintings — the female protagonists that populate the artist’s imaginative world possess distinctive personalities and energies, unrestrained by the constraints of reality.

Likewise, in this exhibition, the artist presents her own reinterpretations of the women who have been called witches. Yet rather than arriving at a conclusion or advocating a fixed position, her paintings simultaneously expose the rigidity that history, narratives, and conventions have imposed on the figure of the witch, while proposing a more fluid and diverse worldview.
