Selected as part of the 2023 Emerging Artists Support Program, Soomin Shon’s solo exhibition 《If Reality Is the Best Metaphor》 examines the duality of values that drive both the individual and society—values that, while serving as engines of progress, often exceed their original purpose to assume an absolute form of power.

The artist explores the fissures within the seemingly solid structure of technology-driven capitalism, visualizing human desire and loneliness through time-based media. The exhibition consists of two main parts: the video work In God We Trust(2023) and the participatory installation Musicbox(2023/2018).

By reconfiguring images collected from everyday life into a montage format, Shon questions the logic of capitalism, while playing a mass-produced music box in an intentionally inefficient manner—proposing a reconsideration of rationality and standardization. Through this process, she seeks to reveal the dual nature of values such as capital and rationalism, which guide both individual and societal structures yet operate as dominant forces.
