Operated by the Samsung Foundation of Culture (Chairman Hwang-sik Kim), Leeum Museum of Art opens 《Collection Display: Modern and Contemporary Art》 on Thursday, February 27. Marking the foundation’s 60th anniversary, this collection exhibition—the first of its kind in roughly three years since the museum’s post-reopening permanent display—features 44 works by 35 artists across M2 and the lobby.

Built through the foundation’s sustained passion and conviction, Leeum’s modern and contemporary collection encompasses landmark works in Korean art alongside key strands of international art history, including European Informel, American Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art.

This display re-examines the collection from a contemporary perspective and proposes new viewpoints. Rather than centering on widely known signature pieces, it highlights important works that have rarely or never been shown.

Of the 44 works on view, 27 are being unveiled to the public for the first time, accompanied by a substantial group of recent acquisitions. The presentation revisits each work’s historical context and artistic significance while offering an opportunity to experience the multilayered strata of art that reflect the currents of the times.

Eschewing strict chronological or thematic organization, the exhibition stages visual and conceptual juxtapositions that encourage visitors to discover fresh relationships among works and to engage in a layered, non-linear experience of art. Without a fixed narrative, each piece expands and modulates within shifting contexts, broadening the horizon of artistic thought.
