Under the title ‘It was the way
of walking through narrative’, Frieze Film 2023 approaches narrative in film
and video as a methodology of excavation. Here, the use of the archaeological
term “excavation” refers to the uncovering and surfacing of narratives that
have been eliminated or omitted from official records—from the gaze of reason
and rationality under the name of history or authority. The project ultimately
aims to speculate and articulate latent or alternative stories that exist
beneath the surface of what is named “the present.”
This year’s edition of Frieze
Film introduces the works of 14 Korean moving image artists—Kwak So Jin, Kim
Daum, Hyojae Kim, Nam Hwayeon, Moojin Brothers, Park Sunmin, Baek Heaven, An
Jungju, Omyo CHO, Lee Eunhee, Jun Sojung, Pyo Minhong, Han Uri, and Hong Lee
Hyun-Sook—through site-specific presentations developed in collaboration with
four non-profit and independent spaces across Seoul: Amado Art Space, BOAN1942
ARTSPACE BOAN 1, Insa Art Space, and MOTHER Offline.
Each work traverses time and
space non-linearly, dismantling and recombining various memories and
experiences to suggest the possibility of new perspectives through
storytelling. As viewers follow these narrative paths, Frieze Film hopes they
will engage with the unique language of video as a contemporary artistic
medium, and sense additional dimensions within the world we inhabit.
