The Yeosu Expo Art Gallery will present the solo exhibition 《Uninhabited Island》 by Kang Hong-Goo from June 5 to August 17. This exhibition was organized as a thematic exhibition centered on “islands,” held in celebration of the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.

The exhibition is composed primarily of more than 40 works included in Kang Hong-Goo’s essay collection ‘Uninhabited Island’, published last December by Youlhwadang. The works introduce the artist’s reveries and memories of the islands along the southern coast, as well as his experiences in his hometown Shinan and the dreams of his childhood.

Going beyond a conventional presentation of artworks, the exhibition attempts a structural experiment by physically unfolding the medium of a book within the exhibition space. Visitors are invited to freely navigate the gallery while holding a booklet-format exhibition guide, allowing them to experience the works in a self-directed manner.

Kang Hong-Goo was born in Shinan, Jeollanam-do. After graduating from Mokpo National University of Education, he studied painting at Hongik University and its graduate school. He has been actively exhibiting at major national museums and key art institutions, and most recently presented a large-scale archival solo exhibition at the Art Archives of the Seoul Museum of Art.

A representative of the Expo Art Gallery stated, “This exhibition was planned to reinterpret the relationships between heterogeneous forms such as books and exhibition spaces, materiality and space, and to dissolve their boundaries,” adding, “We hope this exhibition will provide an opportunity to reflect on the essence of island culture and the geographical and regional meanings of the island renaissance through the concept of ‘connection’ that bridges distances between islands.”

The gallery is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last admission 30 minutes before closing. The gallery is closed every Monday. Further information is available on the Yeosu Tourism and Culture website.
