Sculptor Chung Hyun (b. 1956) has been selected as the winner of the 2nd Kim Bokjin Art Award, the Cheongju Museum of Art announced on the 26th. The Kim Bokjin Art Award is administered by the Cheongju Museum of Art.

The Kim Bokjin Art Award was established by the City of Cheongju to honor the artistic world and profound artistic spirit of Jeong Gwan (井觀) Kim Bokjin (1901–1940), a pioneering figure from Cheongju who laid the foundation of modern Korean art. This year marks the second edition of the award. On December 18, the Cheongju Museum of Art convened the jury for the 2nd Kim Bokjin Art Award, and following a fair evaluation process and in-depth deliberation, selected Chung Hyun as the final recipient.

Chung Hyun works with materials that have exhausted their original purposes or have been discarded, such as railroad sleepers, scrap metal, expired beams, and waste materials. By minimizing artistic intervention, he maximizes the materiality of these substances, while simultaneously sculpting immaterial elements such as temporality, historicity, and personal memory and experience, thereby expanding the scope of sculpture.
The jury stated:

“Chung Hyun has pursued his artistic practice based on respect for humanity, the value of people, and a human-centered philosophy and attitude. Over a long period of time, he has maintained his artistic identity while conducting diverse experiments, and through his outstanding artistic achievements and active practice, he has made a significant contribution to the development of art. For these reasons, he has been selected as the recipient of the 2nd Kim Bokjin Art Award. Moreover, he is an artist whose artistic practice and body of work are worthy of honoring the spirit of Kim Bokjin.”

Born in Incheon in 1956, Chung Hyun studied sculpture at Hongik University and its graduate school, and later studied abroad in France, graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1990. Beginning with his first solo exhibition 《Chung Hyun Sculpture Exhibition》 at Galerie Won in 1992, he has continued an active artistic career through major exhibitions, including 《Chung Hyun》 at the Kumho Museum of Art (2001), 《Artist of the Year 2006: Chung Hyun》 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2006), exhibitions at IBU Gallery, the Palais Royal Garden, and the Parc de Saint-Cloud in Paris (2016), 《Chung Hyun》 at the Kumho Museum of Art (2018), 《Portrait of Time: Chung Hyun》 at the Seongbuk Museum of Art (2022), 《Mass》 at the SeMA Nam-Seoul Museum of Art (2023), participation in the 7th Changwon Sculpture Biennale (2024), and Art Basel Miami Beach.

Regarding the award, Chung Hyun stated:

“When I reflect on my memories of Kim Bokjin, they begin with the publication of ‘The Complete Works of Kim Bokjin’ by Cheongnyeonsa in 1995. Every year on August 18, the anniversary of Kim Bokjin’s passing, I visit his grave with acquaintances. Even though it is midsummer, we place newly published books and exhibition catalogues there and pay our respects. Kim Bokjin began everything—sculpture, theater, criticism—from scratch. He was a man with a rigorous sense of his time, and someone who cannot but be respected. It is an honor to receive an award that commemorates someone who lived his era so intensely, and I will strive to resemble him.”

Park Won-gyu, Director of the Cheongju Museum of Art, stated:

“We are very pleased to have selected Chung Hyun, an artist who honors the artistic spirit of Kim Bokjin and has greatly contributed to the progressive development of Korean art. Through the award exhibition, we plan to highlight Chung Hyun’s distinctive artistic vision and diverse body of work.”
The award ceremony and exhibition of the award recipient will be held at the Cheongju Museum of Art in 2025, and the winner will receive a plaque and a cash prize of 20 million KRW.
