Novelist Hwang Sok-yong, painter Suh Yongsun, and sculptor Ahn Kyuchul will participate in the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall Commemorative Project, to be held on November 9 around the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA; Director Bae Soon-hoon), together with the Goethe-Institut Korea (Director Raimund Woerdemann), recently unveiled the artists’ works, each produced on reinforced Styrofoam panels measuring 250 x 120 x 40 centimeters.

Hwang Sok-yong inscribed a passage from his novel The Old Garden, which deals with the division of Korea, onto a panel using both Korean and German. Suh Yong-sun painted figures of South Korean and North Korean soldiers in vivid, primary colors on both sides of his panel. Ahn Kyuchul contributed drawings depicting various bodily gestures attempting to leap over a wall.
