The Artist © Ahn Kyuchul

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) has selected Ahn Kyuchul as the invited artist for the ‘2015 MMCA Hyundai Motor Series.’

Now in its second year, the ‘MMCA Hyundai Motor Series’ was launched in 2014 with the support of Hyundai Motor Company. The series aims to present new perspectives and possibilities in Korean contemporary art by supporting established Korean artists who have developed distinctive and independent artistic practices. Through this initiative, the museum seeks to encourage sustained artistic production while promoting mid-career Korean artists more actively on both domestic and international stages.

Visitors to the series are invited to gain insight into the current landscape of Korean contemporary art and to experience diverse approaches to the present moment through the works of artists with distinct philosophies and artistic attitudes over the course of the ten-year program.

The series also seeks to strengthen curatorial practice as a key driving force in the development of Korean contemporary art, expanding the professional scope and expertise of curators. Artist recommendations and selections are based on extensive research conducted by the museum’s full curatorial staff, followed by a final decision made through evaluations by both internal and external review committees.

Selected as the 2015 artist, Ahn Kyuchul studied sculpture at Seoul National University and at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. Since the mid-1980s, he has pursued a reflective and contemplative practice centered on life and art. From the 1990s onward, his work developed into a conceptual approach that employs everyday objects to question social contradictions and conventional ways of seeing. Through object-based sculpture and text installations, he has further solidified his artistic language, and since the 2000s has incorporated architectural elements to expand the scope of audience experience and reflection.

《MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2015: Ahn Kyuchul》 will be on view from September 15, 2015, to February 14, 2016, in Gallery 5 of MMCA Seoul. Centered on newly commissioned works that encompass the artist’s broader practice, the exhibition is expected to expand the meaning and role of contemporary art through audience participation and active engagement.
