Painter Suh Yongsun has received the 69th National Academy of Arts, Republic of Korea (Chairperson Shin Soo-jung).
 
On the 5th at 3 p.m., Suh was presented with the Fine Arts Division award at the main conference hall of the National Academy of Arts of Korea in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Poet Kim MyungIn received the Literature Division award, and film director Lee Jang-ho the Theater, Film, and Dance Division award.
 
The National Academy of Arts, Republic of Korea stated that the prize was granted in recognition of Suh’s contributions to the development of Korean contemporary art.
 
Suh Yongsun is regarded as an artist who established a significant axis in Korean contemporary art through a distinctive formal language and intense color centered on historical subjects. His works engage deeply with humanity, history, and social reality, and have drawn attention particularly for their original exploration of the human interior. Extending beyond painting, he has broadened artistic boundaries by excelling in sculpture and installation as well.
 
The Academy evaluated that Suh sublimates themes of his era into art to convey social messages while achieving profound philosophical and aesthetic accomplishments.
 
In his acceptance speech, Suh stated: “Art is both a mirror reflecting human life and a force that changes society. I will continue to give voice to social concerns through art and record our times.”
 
The National Academy of Arts, Republic of Korea is a prestigious prize administered by the Academy, presented to individuals who encourage creative activity among Korean artists and contribute to the development of the arts.
