An unconventional exhibition in which participating artists vote directly for one another’s works to determine the award recipient will be held in Seoul.

Gallery R, located in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, will present the special exhibition 《Portrait/Conclave》 from February 7 to April 11, offering a prize of KRW 20 million. The exhibition is organized by Gallery Director Hwang Young-bae, with exhibition direction by guest curator Ryu Byung-Hak.

Conceived as a project to reflect upon and conclude the work of artists who have collaborated with Gallery R since its opening, the exhibition invites each participating artist to submit one self-portrait. From these works, a single piece will be selected to receive the prize.

Curator Ryu Byung-Hak explained, “Much like the cardinals in the Catholic Church electing the Pope, this exhibition determines its award recipient solely through the votes of the participating artists, without any external jurors. Through this format, we sought to foreground the artists’ creative instincts, the invisible tensions at play, and the mutual gaze exchanged among contemporaries.”

Well known as an art critic, Ryu Byung-Hak has been involved in Gallery R’s exhibition program since its opening in 2022, organizing 13 solo exhibitions and 11 two-person exhibitions to date. He has also expanded his curatorial practice through solo and group exhibitions at CHA Studio in Incheon, EUL Gallery in Daegu, Space TEMI in Daejeon, and Yesul is Background in Gwangju.

A total of 28 artists are participating in the exhibition: Kang Jine, Kim Sangyeon, Kim Sungsoo, Kim Ju Young, Kim Taeheon, Kim Haemin, Kim Heejin, Do Sujin, Park Kiwon, Park Jung-Kee, Park Jung Yong, Bok Jong Soon, Son Bunam, Son Hyun Soo, Ahn Sihyung, Lee Min Jung, Lee Sanghong, Yi Youjin, Lee Inhyeon, Lee Hyunmoo, Jung Seok Hee, Chung Juhee, Choi Sang Hm, Tak Young Ho, Ha Bongho, Heo Kuyoung, and Hong Myung-seop.

The exhibited works span a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, objects, text, installation, natural dyeing, and embroidery, with a total of 31 works on view.

Gallery R Director Hwang Young-bae stated, “Many artists, at least once in their lifetime, undertake the act of confronting themselves directly. We hope this self-portrait exhibition will serve as a space where artists’ creative instincts and the empathy of audiences come together.”

The opening reception will be held on February 7 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is free.
