Kumho Museum of Art presents a solo exhibition of Yoon Dongchun, an artist who has established a distinctive visual language through continuous reflection on contemporaneity, from April 12 to May 14, 2017.

Working across painting, photography, text, and objects, Yoon Dongchun has sustained his own formal and conceptual inquiries. Marking his return to the Kumho Museum of Art ten years after the 2007 exhibition 《Watchtower》, the exhibition 《Ordinary》 places greater emphasis on “the everyday,” which has been both the fundamental premise and point of departure for his practice, and presents new works that explore the beauty embedded in our daily lives. For Yoon Dongchun, art becomes a shared sensibility that exerts its true “power” precisely when it is reduced to the dimension of the everyday.

From the series ‘The Great Performance’ (2017), which addresses events that unfolded in everyday life yet seemed more artistic than art itself, to the ‘Sansil’ (2017) series, which juxtaposes representative everyday spaces that produce beauty with the artist’s own studio, Yoon Dongchun draws overlooked objects and events from daily life into the museum space, generating new sensibilities.

Through the everyday — something shared by all and thus not extraordinary, yet directly connected to our lives — the artist envisions an art that can be collectively shared and enjoyed.

In this exhibition, visitors will encounter a new “everyday” that holds within it both beauty and the potential for subversion.
