Painter Cho Duck Hyun has been selected as the recipient of the 20th LEEINSUNG Art Prize.

The Daegu Art Museum announced that Cho Duck Hyun had been chosen as the recipient of the ‘20th LEEINSUNG Art Prize’ following a meeting of the award’s selection committee.

The LEEINSUNG Art Prize was established in 1999 by the city of Daegu to commemorate the artistic legacy and spirit of Lee Insung (Daegu, 1912–1950), a Western-style painter who made significant contributions to the history of modern Korean art, and to promote the development of Korean art.

After a nomination process conducted by a panel of art experts, the Daegu Art Museum selected five final candidates. Following deliberation by the judging committee, Cho Duck Hyun (Professor, College of Fine Arts, Ewha Womans University) was chosen as the final recipient.

The judging committee consisted of five specialists in Korean contemporary art (Chair: Kim Boky, Professor at Kyonggi University and publisher of Art in Culture), who conducted an in-depth evaluation of the artists’ capabilities and qualifications for the award.

Kim Boggi, the chair of the committee, explained the reason for the selection: “Cho Duck Hyun has expressed the grand epic of humanity through dense compositions that reinterpret Asian history. His work consistently engages with the fundamental meaning of art and its relationship with society. We highly evaluated the wide range of ideas and artistic abilities that embody both potential and symbolic depth.”

The committee also noted that Cho’s solid descriptive skill, grounded in the long tradition of painting, as well as his collaborations with other disciplines and his use of diverse media to explore human life within historical contexts, align with the direction pursued by the LEEINSUNG Art Prize.

Born in Hoengseong, Cho Duck Hyun studied Western painting at Seoul National University. He has held solo exhibitions at institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Ilmin Museum of Art, and has participated in group exhibitions at major museums and galleries in Korea and abroad such as the Park Soo Keun Museum of Art, the Jeu de Paume in France, and the Mori Art Museum.

The award ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on the 4th of next month at the Daegu Art Museum.
