The Digital Archive at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (hereinafter “MMCA Seoul”) has staged exhibitions that give a glimpse into the artistic world of contemporary artists, whose artistic work is based on profound materials related to specific subject matter, or that highlight a certain point in the history of modern Korean art. The fourth exhibit to be held at the Digital Archive in 2015 is titled 《The Garden of ‘NIM’: Cho Duck Hyun Archive》.

On view are exhibition-related materials that encapsulate artist Cho’s artistic endeavors over the past twenty-seven years as well as information related to his extensive artistic oeuvre. In particular, the upcoming exhibit will show among his works selected items that are deemed to hold a place of importance in the history of Korean art, including photographs and objets that were utilized in his major works.

Accordingly, the exhibition will provide viewers the opportunity to have a full glimpse of the art world of veteran artist Cho Duck Hyun, who came onto the Korean art scene in 1988 and to date has held twenty-nine solo shows in and out of his native country.

In this exhibition 《The Garden of ‘NIM’》 archives related to Cho’s previous shows and artworks as well as new works including four large-scale photographs and three large-scale installations, will be on display. The photographs comprise a series titled ‘Hollywood Epic’ which were created by digitally editing individual images of renowned Korean actresses Choi Eun-hee, Kim Ji-mee, and Yang Mi-hee at their prime with memorable scenes from Hollywood films.

The installation, which typically brings to life the entire exhibition space, features music from the internationally acclaimed Germany-based Korean composer Yun I-sang. As Cho’s new project, the installation work 〈The Garden of Sounds〉 is a kind of an artistic experiment exploring how the composer’s music can achieve both harmony and distinction with the visual components as well as show how each artist demonstrates his individual charm.
