The Ho-Am Foundation announced on the 2nd the recipients of the 2025 Samsung Ho-Am Prize. This year marks the first time that a photographer has been selected as the laureate in the arts category.

The 2025 Samsung Ho-Am Prize laureates are Professor Shin Sug Woo of the University of California, Berkeley; Professor Chung Jongkyeong (62) of Seoul National University; Professor Emeritus Kim Seung-woo of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST); Professor Gloria Choi of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); photographer Koo Bohnchang; and Kim Dong-hae, Chairman of Vision Care.

The recipients were selected through a four-month review process conducted by a selection committee of 46 distinguished scholars and experts from Korea and abroad, along with an advisory committee of 63 international scholars. The award ceremony will be held on May 30. Each laureate will receive a certificate, a medal, and a prize of 300 million KRW.

Koo Bohnchang, recipient of the Arts Prize, has expanded and pioneered the field of contemporary Korean photographic art since the 1980s through experimental works that combine refined artistic sensibility with exceptional photographic technique. In recognition of these achievements, he became the first photographer to receive the Samsung Ho-Am Prize in the arts category. His series such as ‘Vessel’ and ‘Masks’, which reinterpret the aesthetics of Korean tradition, have been exhibited at major museums around the world, elevating the global stature of contemporary Korean art and photography.

Since 1991, the Ho-Am Foundation has presented the Samsung Ho-Am Prize to individuals of Korean heritage who have made outstanding contributions to academic research, the arts, social development, and human welfare. Through the 35th awards this year, a total of 182 laureates have received prize money amounting to 36.1 billion KRW.
