The Korean Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in Italy (June 12–November 6) will present a collaborative exhibition by fifteen artists, the largest number of participants in the pavilion’s history.

Kim Sunjung, appointed commissioner of the Korean Pavilion, announced at a press conference on the 30th that fifteen artists had been selected for the pavilion: Kim Beom, Kim Sora, Gimhongsok, Nakion, Moon Sungsic, Park Kiwon, Park Sejin, Bahc Yiso, Bae Young-whan, Sung Nakhee, Oh Heinkuhn, Jewyo Rhii, Yeondoo Jung, Choi Jeong Hwa, and Ham Jin.

The Venice Biennale, widely regarded as one of the world’s three major biennales alongside the Whitney Biennial and the São Paulo Biennial, is characterized by exhibitions organized by each participating country in national pavilions. The title of this year’s Korean Pavilion exhibition is 《Secret beyond the door》.

Kim explained that the exhibition represents “a landscape created by fifteen artists in their twenties to forties who represent contemporary Korean art, inviting viewers to encounter each work one by one as if unveiling something hidden behind a veil.”

This year’s Korean Pavilion plans to exhibit paintings, photographs, and video works inside the building while simultaneously renovating the exterior, transforming the pavilion itself into a work of art that will attract visitors’ attention. Installation artist Park Kiwon will wrap the entire wall with blue translucent FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic), while installation artist Choi Jeong Hwa will install around 20,000 red plastic baskets on the roof and balconies, forming the appearance of a massive fortress.

Inside the exhibition space will be Bahc Yiso’s installation World Chair, Yeondoo Jung’s photograph Evergreen Tower, Sung Nakhee’s mural, Kim Sora’s video work, Gimhongsok’s installation Oval Talk, paintings by Moon Sung-sik and Park Sejin, Oh Heinkuhn’s photograph May Photographs of Gwangju, Bae Young-whan’s video Pop Song Project, installations by Jewyo Rhii, and Kim Beom’s installation An lron in the Form of a Radio, a kettle in the Form of an lron and a Radio in the Form of a Kettle, along with graffiti paintings by Nakion and object-based works by Ham Jin.
