《MMCA Hyundai Motor Series》 is a long-term collaborative project in which the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea selects one mid-career artist or artist group each year with the support of Hyundai Motor Company. The program aims to maximize the selected artist’s creative potential and support the realization of a new large-scale exhibition. In 2021, Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho were selected as the participating artists, creating an opportunity for them to seek a new turning point in their artistic practice.

News from Nowhere is a long-term project initiated by Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho in 2012. It was first presented at 《dOCUMENTA 13》 in Kassel, Germany, and in the same year was also shown in 《Korea Artist Prize 2012》 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, where the artists were ultimately selected as the final prize winners. Since then, the project has continued to expand through exhibitions at Sullivan Galleries at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich in 2015, and Tate Liverpool in the United Kingdom in 2018.

The newly presented exhibition 《MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2021: Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho – News from Nowhere, Freedom Village》 marks a new chapter in this long-term project. Set in Daeseong-dong Freedom Village, the only civilian settlement within the southern side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the exhibition raises questions about human life after disaster and the role of art.

Beginning with a two-channel video work, the exhibition unfolds through large-scale paintings, archival materials, and multidisciplinary research and workshops. Through the project, Daeseong-dong Freedom Village moves beyond being viewed solely through the ideological lens of Korea’s unique political circumstances. Instead, it is presented as a site that reveals the shared conditions of human life, prompting an awareness of the contradictions and irrationalities embedded in the world that surrounds us.
