The Gwangju Biennale Foundation announced at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Gwangju Biennale on the 6th that artists JEON Joonho and MOON Kyungwon were selected as the recipients of the “Noon Art Award.”

The Noon Art Award is given to artists who present works that align with the founding spirit and values of the Gwangju Biennale while demonstrating strong creativity and experimental spirit. The award includes a prize of $10,000.

The collaborative video work El Fin del Mundo(2012) depicts a survivor living in a future environment transformed by rapid climate change. The 13-minute-45-second film features actors Lee Jung-jae and Lim Soo-jung and imagines the world one hundred years in the future, asking viewers to reflect on our present lives through that speculative scenario.

JEON Joonho commented, “There were so many outstanding artists participating that we did not expect to win at all. The judges came to see our work during installation, but we didn’t realize they were evaluating it. We simply thought they found the work interesting.”

The work was also presented at Documenta in Kassel, Germany as one of three components within the larger project News from Nowhere.

When asked why El Fin del Mundo received the Noon Art Award, JEON Joonho explained that one of the judges praised the work for offering rich possibilities for discourse, for its metaphysical interpretation, and for its striking visual imagery.

Originally, the artists had planned to create a work incorporating imagery from Soswaewon Garden and Songgwangsa Temple for the Gwangju Biennale. However, due to budget constraints and scheduling issues, they ultimately decided to present El Fin del Mundo instead.

Although the work had already been shown at Documenta, the artists performed new color grading and computer graphics enhancements and installed the video differently in Gwangju in order to focus more strongly on the cinematic experience.

JEON Joonho also expressed his anticipation for the 2012 Busan Biennale. “Roger M. Bürgel, who served as artistic director of Documenta in Kassel, is directing the 2012 Busan Biennale. I’m really looking forward to it and definitely plan to visit,” he said.
