Space Willing N Dealing presents Yeondoo Jung’s solo exhibition 《Here and Elsewhere / d’Ici et d’Ailleurs》 from October 8 to October 30, 2020. In 2016, the artist participated in a residency at the MAC/VAL museum in France, where he encountered residents of a southeastern suburban city.

The majority of the local residents were immigrants from other regions, and in this exhibition he presents five works that transform into art, through his distinctive staging, the lives of immigrants living away from their homelands and the expectations they once held for life in foreign places as remembered from their past.

Each work was produced based on interviews conducted directly by the artist. The personal narratives of Tau, who became a political refugee from Côte d’Ivoire due to civil war; Ok Kyung Choi, who settled in France in pursuit of a more meaningful life; and Catherine from Tunisia, who chose a broader life in the wider world over a forced marriage at a young age, are presented like scenes from a film, accompanied by beautiful landscapes and recorded narration.

The narration was newly recorded in Korean for the 2020 exhibition at Space Willing N Dealing. Following each speaker’s story, the artist photographs the corresponding settings and reconstructs them once again, creating a box-like spatial structure composed of layered images. At the same time, within the microscopic details of these images, viewers can discern the speakers’ emotions, experiences, and lives.
