Trying to erase countless specific things. Reaching abstraction by eliminating symbols and concrete images. When our intellect pushes away concrete things and leaves only vague traces, combining these abstract things at some point actually leads us to become concrete. The concreteness here is a combination of sensations that cannot be perceived as elements beyond conceptual intellectbut can be felt.

The exhibition 《Concrete Rhythm》 at Pipe Gallery offers a glimpse into the abstract languages of three artists composed of concrete sensations.

Winter Gyeoul Kim (b.1988) expands concepts to reveal shapes that appear hidden but are made up of rhythm and color, allowing for various associations. Seeun Kim (b.1989) works with her own visual language, capturing the multifaceted energy of each scene. Jonghwan Jin (b.1991) departs from reproduction, focusing on the specific impressions and sensations of a particular moment that goes beyond representation. Like this Concrete Rhythm shows the 3 artists’s way of work in a common approach.

Winter Gyeoul Kim (b.1988) explores the hidden by imagining the unknown revealed by invisible subjects(objects). She finds the subject matter of her works in the realm of painting; she particularly is interested in expressing the unseen world of non-figurative art. She intentionally evokes incomplete and unfamiliar sensations, breaking free from the formal systems we are accustomed to perceiving. Conversely, the more incomplete you create, the more concrete the actual uncertainty is, and the possibility of conversation we perceive conceptually expands.

Seeun Kim (b.1989) brings forth the inherent sense and dynamic movement of every scene through diverse mixed materials. In a similar context, she captures the power that creates infinite fluidity in the human body. However, she does not directly represent anything, instead presenting a whole landscape through the clear sensations of color, rhythm and composition.

Jonghwan Jin (b.1991) visually portrays his inner experiences and pure sensations he has encountered. He conveys the specific experiences of air and tactile sensations he felt in his body, as well as the vitality and vibrations of the external world in a non-representational manner. However, at times, he does not completely exclude the forms of visible landscapes from his visual language, giving him autonomy that surpasses the limits of simple abstraction. However, sometimes the form of visible scenery is not completely excluded from his formative language, so he has autonomy that crosses the limits of simple abstraction.

The exhibition 《Concrete Rhythm》 hopes to transcend the distinction between abstraction and concreteness through the works of Winter Gyeoul Kim, Seeun Kim, and Jonghwan Jin, allowing the power and internal rhythm expressed in the paintings to be contemplated.
