OCI Museum of Art (Susong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul) launches its annual emerging artist support program, “2018 OCI Young Creatives”, with a series of six solo exhibitions by the selected artists. The first shows, on view through July 7, feature “Letters” by Byungkoo Jeon and “Teeth on Tail” by Hejum Bä.

Hejum Bä (b. 1987), who is currently active between Korea and Germany, constructs vivid compositions from colorful planes intuitively assembled in her mind, translating these into her own distinct formal language on canvas.

Byungkoo Jeon (b. 1985) captures everyday scenes on his phone or collects mass media imagery, which he then archives digitally. Through a process of visual erosion and reinterpretation, he recontextualizes these images into new painterly expressions.

Following these exhibitions, shows by artists Yunjung Han and Sunyoung Oh will run from July 19 to August 18, and works by Mina Cho, Hanqing Ma, and Mona Yoo will be presented from August 30 to October 6.

Launched in 2010, OCI Young Creatives is now in its ninth edition. The program selects promising Korean artists aged 35 and under through an open call. To date, 61 artists have been selected. Each receives a grant of 10 million KRW and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the OCI Museum of Art.

On June 13, the museum stated, “This year’s lineup will highlight the diversity of contemporary art—spanning painting, installation, photography, and media art—and offer a valuable glimpse into the bold, inventive ideas of Korea’s emerging artists.” The 2019 call for submissions will take place from July 19 to 28.
