Artist siren eun young jung (44) has been announced as the winner of the "Korea Artist Prize 2018," awarded by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), according to a statement from the museum on the 5th.

jung has garnered attention for her documentary-style video installations and archival projects that shed light on Yeoseong Gukgeuk, a form of Korean popular theater performed exclusively by women that was popular in the 1950s and 60s but has since been largely forgotten. The jury stated, “With a deeply developed thematic focus over a long period, she effectively completed her works and exhibition by creatively utilizing mediums such as video, performance, and archival methods.”

Prior to the award announcement, jung showcased her new works, including Deferral Theatre and Deferred Archive, along with archival materials at the Korea Artist Prize finalist exhibition held at the MMCA Seoul in Sogyeok-dong, which runs until November 25. The exhibition also features new works by the other finalists: artists Jae Ho Jung, Ku Min-ja, and the artist collective Okin Collective.

The jury for this year's prize included Bartomeu Mari (Director of MMCA), Kim Sung-won (Director of Exhibition Business at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju), Cuauhtémoc Medina (Artistic Director of the 2018 Shanghai Biennale), Suzanne Cotter (Director of MUDAM Luxembourg), and Wang Chunchen (Deputy Director of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum in China).
