The jury of the Hermès Foundation Art Award announced on the 10th that artist siren eun young jung has been selected as the winner of the "2013 Hermès Foundation Art Award."

Media artist siren eun young jung was honored with the award for her work Act of Affect, which focuses on the stories of female performers who played male roles in Yeoseong Gukgeuk, a traditional Korean theater performed exclusively by women. Her work particularly sheds light on the experience of young female actors who took on male roles in Yeoseong Gukgeuk.

The jury commented, “In the context of South Korean society, where masculinity remains deeply entrenched, jung restores a fading tradition. By reconstructing the process of ‘becoming male’ among female actors in Yeoseong Gukgeuk, she challenges the very concepts of masculinity and gender.”

The award ceremony was held at Atelier Hermès on the third floor of Maison Hermès Dosan Park in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. jung received a trophy and a prize of 20 million won.

The winning work is on display at Atelier Hermès until the 29th of this month.

The Hermès Foundation Art Award was established in 2000 by the Hermès Foundation to contribute to the development of Korea’s cultural and artistic scene. This year marks the 14th edition of the award, which has previously been awarded to artists such as Jang Young-hye, Kim Beom, Park Iso, Do Ho Suh, and Park Chan-kyong.
