Korean installation artist Lee Bul (52) has been awarded France’s Order of Arts and Letters in recognition of her contributions to cultural and artistic cooperation between Korea and France.

The French Embassy in South Korea announced on the 27th that a ceremony will be held at the ambassador’s residence on the 7th of next month to present the award to Lee. The Order of Arts and Letters is a distinction bestowed by the French government to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of culture and the arts.

Graduating from the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University, Lee became well-known for her works that critique the male gaze in its attempt to define and shape the female body. In 2007, she became the first Korean artist to hold a solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris. Last year, she also held an exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, actively presenting her works both domestically and internationally.

Diane José, Cultural Attaché at the French Embassy in Seoul, explained the selection process, stating, “Lee Bul deeply moved the French audience when she participated in the Lyon Biennale in 1991, and she recently captured significant attention from the French public with her installation art exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, marking the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France.”

Notable past Korean recipients of this honor include Chung Myung-hun, former artistic director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, actress Youn Jung-hee and her husband pianist Paik Kun-woo, and Jeon Yong-jun, chairman of Taejin International, which operates the Louis Quatorze fashion brand.
