Artist Hwang Minkyu focuses on the social impacts that arise during the blending of virtual and real worlds, drawing images in ways familiar to the public through the subcultures of the 1980s and 1990s. Particularly based on video media, he constructs a turn-of-the-century worldview according to the principles of documentation and manipulation, concentrating on depicting the misfortunes of contemporary society.

The main work of this solo exhibition, The End of a Territory, unfolds around an incident in the studio of the artist’s friend. The friend had secured a home using government-supported rental funds but faced eviction due to a paperwork issue. To overcome this crisis, the friend needed a large sum of money and, after exploring several options, decided to participate in a hip-hop audition.

Hwang Minkyu’s documentary footage is conveyed through the dialogue and editing styles of subculture. Except for the protagonist’s voice, the work is filled with pre-existing dialogue, reborn with a 1990s analog sensibility.

Through this process of recombination, the artist summons past voices into the present to look toward the future, illustrating how the struggles of individual lives and the melancholy of the turn-of-the-century era permeate across time.
