The Busan Biennale Organizing Committee (hereafter referred to as the Committee) announced on the 5th that it would hold a month-long open call for personal stories from the 1st to the 31st to be incorporated into an artwork for 《Sea Art Festival 2023》.

《Sea Art Festival 2023》 is scheduled to open on October 14 at Ilgwang Beach, and the stories collected through the open call will be used to create Echo, Filled in the Sea, an artwork by Busan-born artist Doki Kim.

Echo, Filled in the Sea, which will be presented at 《Sea Art Festival 2023》, is a net-shaped installation measuring 8 meters in both width and height. The stories submitted by citizens will be converted into Morse code, with dots (·) represented by pearls and dashes (–) by beads, which will be woven into the net to form the artwork.

The artist gathers unspoken words filled with longing, love, resentment, sorrow, and earnest wishes for someone into a net of art, transforming them into shimmering echoes.

Doki Kim graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts and received a master's degree in Intermedia Art from its Graduate School of Fine Arts. Kim has extensive experience in exhibitions and research projects in Busan, including Choryang 1925, the Old Downtown Project, the Kangkangee Arts Village Project, and the New Choryang Archive.

Interested in the existence of beings and the world as manifested through interactions between matter and energy, Kim explores natural principles and laws, social phenomena, and human relationships through various media, including installation, photography, video, and performance.

Stories can be submitted anonymously through Naver Forms, with participants invited to write approximately 100 to 400 characters about something they wish to convey. Applicants will not be notified individually of whether their stories have been selected. The completed artwork will be on view at Ilgwang Beach for 37 days, from October 14 to November 19.

Meanwhile, Koo Jeong A, who participated in 《Busan Biennale 2020》 and attracted attention after being selected as the artist for the Korean Pavilion at the 《2024 Venice Biennale》, is also conducting an open call.

The 《KOO JEONG A: ODORAMA CITIES》 Scent Memory Open Call seeks to collect scent memories associated with Korea. Personal memories of scents connected to cities or hometowns will be gathered and incorporated into the exhibition or transformed into a new perfume through the fragrance brand NONFICTION.

Jacob Fabricius, artistic director of the Korean Pavilion at the 《2024 Venice Biennale》, who previously served as artistic director of 《Busan Biennale 2020》 and developed a connection with the city, remarked, "Busan is like a second hometown to me," adding, "I hope many citizens of Busan will participate so that we can collect as many scent memories of the city as possible."
