The Jang Doo-kun Art Award Steering Committee at the Pohang Museum of Steel Art announced that artist Mi-jung SHIN has been selected as the recipient of the 19th Jang Doo-kun Art Award.

A video and installation artist, SHIN was born in Pohang in 1983. She studied Fine Arts at Chugye University for the Arts, where she received her bachelor’s degree, and at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Dijon in France, where she earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She has held seven solo exhibitions and participated in approximately 39 group exhibitions.

Focusing on the personal histories of migrants within local communities, SHIN has developed experimental video works that document the lives of individuals who were forgotten or forcibly erased from Korea’s modern history. At the same time, she has sought to move beyond historical narratives by exploring the open-ended possibilities of interpretation inherent in moving images.

Regarding the award, SHIN said, “I am grateful that my work to date has been recognized and encouraged. I am especially honored to have the opportunity to exhibit in my hometown of Pohang, where the artistic spirit of Choheon Jang Doo-kun remains alive. I hope to carry forward his affection for the region and his experimental spirit toward art, and to present strong new work in next year’s exhibition.”

The Jang Doo-kun Art Award was established in 2005 to honor the artistic legacy of Choheon Jang Doo-kun (1918–2015), a Pohang-born painter who represents an important chapter in the history of modern and contemporary Korean art, and to contribute to the development of the local art scene.

Each year, the Pohang Museum of Steel Art selects a recipient, who receives a plaque from the Mayor of Pohang, a KRW 8 million creative grant from the Jang Doo-kun Art Award Steering Committee, and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the Pohang Museum of Steel Art.
