The Daejeon Museum of Art has consistently organized exhibitions presenting newly acquired works from its collection. 《The Museum Founded on Artworks》 introduces works acquired over the three-year period from 2022 to 2024.

The exhibition title begins with the idea that “a museum is constituted by its collection.” As the title suggests, a museum builds its identity upon its holdings, while a distinctive collecting policy differentiates one institution from another. Through the process of rereading and contextualizing its collection, the museum’s direction becomes more clearly defined. This exhibition presents that trajectory along a single axis.

*The Korean title of the exhibition, “Jakpum Wieui Misulgwan,” emphasizes, like its English title 《The Museum Founded on Artworks》, the relationship through which a museum is established on the accumulation and value formation of artworks.

From 2022 to 2024, the museum pursued acquisitions in a range of directions. As a leading art institution in the region, it established a body of works that traces the development of art in Daejeon and secured representative works by accomplished local artists.

At the same time, it expanded its collection to include contemporary works from Korea and abroad and, in conjunction with the opening of its open storage facility, acquired works across diverse media, including three-dimensional works, in order to build a more balanced collection. The exhibition is organized so that visitors can view major acquisitions chronologically by year.

In 2022, the museum sought diversity and balance across genres by acquiring works with consideration for both regional identity and contemporaneity. In 2023, as the scale of acquisitions expanded, the museum strengthened connections with research on local art history and pursued strategic acquisitions in preparation for the operation of its open storage facility.

In 2024, works by senior artists and promising new-media artists were brought together, balancing art-historical significance with contemporary developments and reflecting both the identity and future direction of the Daejeon Museum of Art.

Presenting three years of new acquisitions, 《The Museum Founded on Artworks》 offers a concise view of current developments in contemporary and regional art through the messages conveyed by the newly collected works. In doing so, it allows visitors to encounter an image of the museum as one formed through its collection.
