The ‘Single Gentre Femur’ series, kicked off in 2020, began with infinite questions on and documentation of perspectives on massacres in Korean modern and contemporary history. The series was initiated by the artist through participation in the process of excavating remains from these massacres, and it currently expands its studies to the human body, biology, life, preservation, archeology, documentation, and taxonomy.

Single here means “a solo” and “one.” Gentre is an old name for Jeju Airport from the early 1940s, as well as a phonetic pronunciation of a Middle Age name “gentry,” which sounds similar to “gentle” in English.

Femur is a medical notation for the thighbone, which is the most sturdy and unique bone among the 206 bones of the human body. It is a fundamental index during the process of excavation to distinguish someone’s sex and age, and it is used to count the number of bodies in an excavation. (Translated by Min-hyung Kang)
