The Goam Lee Ungno Birthplace Memorial Museum (hereafter “House of Lee Ungno”) has selected five resident artists who will work at its Creative Studio for ten months this year.

Last year, the Artist Residency in the House of Lee Ungno held an open call for residents in the fields of theory (Korean art history and modern and contemporary Korean art history), painting (based on Korean painting), and public art, receiving applications from a total of 17 theorists and artists.

On January 30, House of Lee Ungno conducted a second-round interview with nine applicants who had passed the initial document screening, ultimately selecting five residents: two in painting and three in public art.

The selected resident artists are ▶ Chang Tae Young (Korean painting) and ▶ Park Se yeon (Western painting) in the painting category, and ▶ Kwon Yongju (environmental sculpture), ▶ Park Yumi (video, drawing, installation), and ▶ Jeong Sangcheol (architecture) in the public art category.

The chair of the selection committee stated, “The artists selected in the painting category stood out for their determination to reconsider their own practices through the work of Goam Lee Ungno, while the proposals in the public art category raised expectations for their residency activities by seeking to expand the possibilities of art into a public role through connections with the local community.”

The selected artists will begin their activities on March 1 and continue through December 31, working in the hanok and container studios located at House of Lee Ungno. Programs will include open studios presenting the artists’ practices, solo exhibitions by resident artists, and artist-proposed projects developed in connection with the local community.
