The 2017 Jisan Valley Rock Music & Arts Festival (hereafter “Valley Rock”), to be held from July 28 to 30 at Jisan Resort in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, has announced the lineup of artists participating in its art projects.
Having evolved last year into an upgraded “Music & Arts” festival through collaborations between leading musicians and visual artists from Korea and abroad, Valley Rock will present an even more developed art program this year in collaboration with the CJ E&M Art Creation Division and art director Ho Kyoung Yun, who has invited some of the most prominent artists in the field to participate.
The Art Creation Division oversees the art and technology not only for programs across all CJ E&M channels, but also for global content such as MAMA and KCON, which promote Korean culture internationally. Following the distinctive stage designs and art performances presented at last year’s Valley Rock, the division plans to create new stage art combining technology and art, as well as conceptual entrance gates, for this year’s festival.
The artists announced today for the art projects have each developed distinctive bodies of work and pursued artistic experimentation within their respective fields, and are expected to offer audiences new and unusual experiences at this year’s Valley Rock.
Hong Seung-hye, a leading figure in Korean contemporary art, will present Victoria, which visualizes the “V” of Valley Rock and victory, while Gwon Osang, who has been active in Korea and internationally through projects including a collaboration with G-Dragon, will present New Structure, modeled on some of Valley Rock’s featured musicians.
Other projects include Kwon Yongju’s Waterfall, designed to offer respite from the summer heat; Yunsabi’s Prism, which uses natural light to create a diverse spectrum of luminous experiences; and seendosi’s Hidden Bar, intended to heighten the atmosphere of the midsummer-night festival. Together, these art projects will create spaces where audiences with diverse tastes and experiences can gather, interact, and communicate.
Under this year’s “Hide & Seek” concept, Valley Rock aims to develop into a participatory festival where visitors can enjoy discovering artworks hidden throughout the festival grounds as though playing hide-and-seek in a forest, transforming the venue into a fresh and engaging art space.
In addition, Valley Rock will be structured around the contrasting keywords “Day & Night” and “Hot & Cool,” creating a synesthetic festival experience in which audiences can encounter a wide range of art throughout the day and night, amid the coexistence of heat and coolness characteristic of the “Music & Arts” festival.
One of this year’s distinctive attractions will be the opportunity for visitors to search for the letter “V” hidden throughout the artworks. To encourage communication with audiences, the festival will recruit university student docents known as “V Finders.”
This year, Valley Rock once again seeks to become Korea’s only festival offering an experience that engages all five senses, bringing art and music together freely while making full use of its nature-friendly venue through entertaining and diverse content and art spaces that visitors can both see and touch.
Meanwhile, Valley Rock has heightened public anticipation by announcing a lineup of internationally acclaimed artists including Sigur Rós, Gorillaz, Major Lazer, Lorde, Lukas Graham, RADWIMPS, Gallant, Slowdive, LANY, EDEN, Ásgeir, Goldroom, The Amazons, Diplo, and The fin., alongside popular and accomplished Korean acts including Lee Juck, NELL, 9 and the Numbers, Glen Check, THE KOXX, Silica Gel & Parasol, Jannabi, Life and Time, Car, the garden, MKIT RAIN, SEENROOT, ZICO, HYUKOH, Sultan of the Disco, SORAN, National Pigeon Unity, Raw By Peppers, iamnot, Xin Seha and the Town, Shin Hae Gyeong, and Wetter, as well as special collaborative performances such as Sunwoojunga with Sowall and Valley Rock X Jarasum Jazz.
