Yangju City is accelerating efforts to broaden the foundation of local arts and culture by supporting talented contemporary artists. Through its public creative space, the city aims to build a community-oriented art ecosystem where artists and residents can engage with one another.

According to Yangju City on the 9th, five artists—Maeng Seonggyu, Bang Sung Uk, Seo Jeong-bae, Im Do, and Hong Euyoung—were selected as the 11th cohort of artists-in-residence at the Yangju City Art Studio. The selection process involved rigorous document reviews and interviews, and the selected artists moved into the studio earlier this month and have begun their creative activities.

They will reside at the studio alongside five artists from the 10th cohort who joined earlier—Kim Minji, Beom Jinyong, Shin Yong Jae, Jeon Ka Bin, and Soo Hong—and continue to engage in artistic exchange. Since opening in 2014, the Yangju City Art Studio has supported a total of 70 artists, providing a stable working environment and exhibition programs while establishing itself as a major artistic hub in the region.

In particular, the 11th cohort will take part not only in their individual practices but also in public art projects connected with the local community. Beginning with the exhibition 《Check-in》 this month, they will engage directly with residents through open studios, relay solo exhibitions, and group exhibitions.

They will also contribute to the revitalization of local culture through programs organized in collaboration with partner institutions, including art education programs for children.

The studio has continued to evolve into a participatory platform for local residents, expanding beyond the boundaries of a conventional creative workspace through collaborations with institutions such as the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education Northern Early Childhood Experience Education Institute. Building on these achievements, the city plans to strengthen networks among artists and enhance the public role of art within the local community.

Lee Gyeyoung, Director of the Yangju City Museum of Art, stated, “The Art Studio is a key public creative platform connecting the local community with art. We will continue to expand its role as a cultural and artistic space so that the creative activities of artists can become part of citizens’ everyday lives.”
