Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 22nd that it had selected an additional 22 artists and artworks to expand the Art City Bus project, which has received a strong response from citizens since its pilot introduction late last year.

Unlike the pilot program last year, this year’s Artist Selection Task Force review selected participants from across the country, including eight artists from Gwangju—Choi Miyeon, Park Gu Hwan, Seong Hye-rim, Lee Junseok, Cho Keun Ho, Kim Kye Jin, Kim Younghwa, and Lim Namjin—as well as six artists from Seoul—Kim Yongkwan, Wee Young-il, Jang Jongwan, Lee Sangwon, Yoo Seungho, and Eunhyung Kim; three artists from Busan—Kim Hanna, Han Choong-seok, and Shin Daejun; two artists from Daegu—Kim Minsu and Jung Seunghye; and three artists from Daejeon—Lee In-hee, Choi Joohee, and Lee Soongu.

In March, Gwangju conducted a survey of 500 citizens on the Art City Bus at high-traffic locations, including bus stops and terminals along routes served by the buses and areas around universities.

According to the survey results, the majority of respondents (87%) evaluated the project positively. Among them, 40.6% said that it would help enhance Gwangju’s image as a city of art and culture, while 40.2% described the buses as “fun, novel, and beautiful.” In particular, 72% of respondents in their twenties said they found the project fun and visually appealing.

A Gwangju city official said, “Citizens appeared to prefer works that are fun and feature beautiful colors rather than works with obscure or dark imagery. The works by the 22 artists selected this time are largely artistic, bright, beautiful, and engaging, and we hope they can offer citizens a sense of comfort and respite within the repetition of everyday life.”

Gwangju also stated that, during the expansion process, wrapping work—applying film printed with the artworks to the surfaces of buses—would be carried out gradually so as not to inconvenience public bus users, with the newly designed Art City Buses expected to begin operating as early as the beginning of July.
