As part of its residency program, Incheon Art Platform runs the “Creation and Production Project,” which supports the creative activities of its resident artists in 2022. As the seventh project in the visual arts category this year, the platform presents Lee Jungwoo’s solo exhibition 《Not on board》.

Lee Jungwoo has focused on points that cannot be fully understood through conventional modes of thinking, yet nevertheless continue to function within reality and sustain it as ironic phenomena. Concentrating on the seemingly incompatible relationship between the ‘operation and malfunction’ of systems, he reconstructs these conditions primarily through moving-image media.

《Not on board》 presents a moving-image work of the same title at Incheon Art Platform’s Performance Hall C, revealing a process of pre-production that proposes a kind of blueprint or production plan for a time yet to come—a future and a film that has not yet been made. The three-channel video work, characterized by the possibility of something that will never actually be realized, was previously presented at TINC last year.

The artist imagines a fictional film and completes it entirely at the pre-production stage, using this process as an attempt to visualize the future. To do so, he establishes the film’s primary setting as an informal settlement at an imaginary point in time and presents the process of designing it through various methods, including stream ripping, found footage, reference images, FPV drone filming, 3D spatial scanning, and rendering.

These preliminary visualizations for a film that will never be produced intersect a future of possibility with a future of uncertainty, asking viewers to discover what has been buried within a black hole where hope and anxiety intermingle, and what we might need to salvage from it.
