When Starya Hee-seung Sung was a student in my class in 2004, she was already working across painting, performance, and video, as she continues to do today, often combining these media within a single practice. This is evidence of Sung’s artistic focus and dedication.

For example, she would create improvised paintings in front of an audience and, months or even years later, transform photographs taken during those performances into paintings.

Sung has also used her own body as a canvas. Her performance works have included shaving her head, wearing brightly colored wigs, and painting her face like a mask. In one distinctive video work, Sung appeared in a leotard with her face painted like a mask before a CCTV surveillance camera installed at the entrance to the Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

The video, which captured her playful actions distorted through the camera’s fisheye lens, offered viewers a sense of humor and enjoyment. Beyond the provocative aspect of the performance, what was particularly striking was her ability to gain access to CCTV surveillance footage and use it for a video work that boldly drew attention to the pervasiveness of surveillance culture, some twenty years before such issues became as prominent as they are today.

I considered this work highly significant and included it in 《...but I was only acting!》, an international video art exhibition I curated at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. The exhibition was successful, and Sung’s work attracted considerable attention from curators and critics.

To this day, we have remained in professional contact. I have followed Sung’s artistic trajectory as she has developed into an internationally respected professional artist with a successful exhibition career in Seoul, London, Paris, and elsewhere.

One aspect of her practice that continues to interest me is the way she has maintained her ability to combine diverse media effectively, just as she did in her earlier work. For example, she has repeatedly staged visually compelling performances in which she paints on canvas before an audience.

Her technical proficiency has also developed to the point where she can complete paintings with remarkable speed, as seen in her recent videos produced either as artworks or in documentary form. What is often surprising is that the resulting works can be as aesthetically beautiful and complex as those she creates alone in her studio.

One particularly striking example is the performance and resulting work 7 Days of Creation_invisible to visible, in which a densely painted celestial realm bordered by a rainbow gradually emerges before the audience above a radiant burst of colorful flowers, fruit, and vegetation, offering a sense of promise and hope for the future. In this work, the audience witnesses the visible act of creation as an extension of a more powerful “invisible” act of creation brought forth by a divine nature.

This theme represents a more recent development in Starya Hee-seung Sung’s artistic practice. Although she has always been a talented figurative painter, her work has become increasingly abstract. She has been creating large-scale paintings in which the entire canvas is filled with networks of stars.

Over the past several years, she has explored a range of styles and techniques, building up dense layers of rich color—whether on an intimate scale or a mural scale—to create celestial fields of stars with a sense of depth, like looking up into the night sky. The resulting works hold the viewer’s gaze and invite contemplation of nature and the spiritual.

More recently, Sung returned to New York as a professor at New York University, where she has been developing new work, teaching, and meeting with graduate students. I look forward to continuing to work with her as a colleague at NYU, as well as in my roles as a curator and artist.

As a curator and art critic, and as the former director of White Columns, one of New York’s leading contemporary art spaces dedicated to supporting new and innovative artists, I have watched Starya Hee-seung Sung emerge as an important and compelling artist who is internationally recognized and respected.

Since including her in the exhibition in Madrid, I have featured her in other exhibitions and publications, most notably in 《Copilandia》 at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville.

With her return to New York, I am honored to have the opportunity to work with her again. Because I have complete confidence in Sung’s artistic excellence, I have been introducing her to some of New York’s most important curators, artists, and gallery dealers.

Starya Hee-seung Sung possesses an exceptionally rare talent, and I am excited to help bring her work to some of the most renowned art venues in New York, Los Angeles, Spain, and beyond.
