At the Gangneung International Art Festival GIAF22, opening on November 4, artist Dongwan Kook will present To My Little Artist, a project that invites participants to rediscover drawings from their preschool years—the “first scribbles” that nearly everyone made as a child.

Here, the “little artist” refers to children approximately two to seven years old, before they enter school. The project looks back on a time when everyone freely drew whatever came to mind and traces the process of rediscovering the artistic sensibilities of childhood that may have gone unnoticed.

At the moment when everything a child sees, feels, and hears is expressed through drawing, even seemingly meaningless scribbles become a means of revealing the self. By freely drawing lines as an initial form of self-expression, children give shape to instinctive impulses and discover sensory pleasure.

Through contact with their surroundings and the act of drawing with their eyes and hands, children begin to understand the relationship between themselves and the world. Dongwan Kook, the participating artist who proposed the project, explained, “When does a scribble become art? Why are parents so amazed by their children’s drawings? These questions were the starting point of the project.”

Participating in the project is simple. Participants select either a drawing they made during their own preschool years or a work by their child that they considered an “artwork.” After photographing the work, they upload it to Instagram with the hashtags #ToMyLittleArtist, #GIAF, and #DongwanKook. (Each post must include the title of the work, artist, materials, dimensions, and year of production [the child’s age at the time].)

After uploading the post, participants nominate three other people to continue the challenge. The submitted children’s works will be exhibited at GO.re Bookstore during the Gangneung International Art Festival.

Submissions for To My Little Artist will be accepted from August 10 through September 13.
