Donghee Kim is to present his solo exhibition titled 《3 Volumes》 at Audio Visual Pavilion from May 11 to June 11, 2017. The artist has created works by considering a space as a material and a condition, showcasing his works in the space of AVP as if it were a pedestal.

He opts for a way to attach and cover with his structures instead of demolishing or removing the footprints and remains of views remaining in the physical structure and space in this space. This approach is interlinked with the ways he had attempted to try or experimented with in many different spaces. By doing so, he imposes the roles of a pedestal which can best represents his works in this space.

On a pedestal of 119.7㎡, a piece of work is placed for which materials or the size cannot be described. Once one walks into the work, he or she would confront structures which exist being detached from the inherent purposes or functions of the stairs, a balcony, a rounded wall, a mirror, a narrow and long aisle, window frame and plants.

The structures form a dynamic relationship by being connected, disintegrated, crushed and connected again via people that have entered in. Audiences as actors that move according to questions designed by the artist or themselves – ‘Would you walk on?’, ‘Would you stop?’, ‘Would you look at it?’, ‘Would you return?’, ‘Would you skip it?’ and ‘Would you climb?’ – serve as critical elements to activate this work.

There is one phrase to keep in mind before entering into Donghee Kim’s work: ‘Mind your head’. It is an instruction notice on the height, size and area of an exhibition space which might be embodied by audiences somewhere who have been to this place at least once.
