Suwon Museum of Art opened in 2015 and is a relatively young museum, now approaching its fifth anniversary. Having started later than many other institutions, the museum has been working to address a range of longstanding local initiatives while carrying out exhibitions, educational programs, academic research, and other projects aimed at growing together with artists from the region.

The Artist Discovery Project was first launched at Suwon Ipark Museum of Art in 2018 and, in 2019, shifted to a new open-call format. This second exhibition introduces young artists selected through that process. The open-call format was adopted to identify emerging artists seeking a fresh start, as well as to discover artists already active in the field who had not previously been recognized as artists from the region.

SIMA is an acronym for Suwon Ipark Museum of Art, while “Farm” refers not only to an agricultural farm but also to the farm system in Major League Baseball in the United States, where young players receive systematic training and gain game experience through affiliated clubs.

The name reflects the museum’s ambition to provide young artists with a wide range of experiences and to serve as both a foundation for new beginnings and a structured system for their development.

The project expanded its geographical scope beyond Suwon to include Hwaseong and Osan, bringing together ten young artists from the three cities collectively referred to as “San-Su-Hwa”—Osan, Suwon, and Hwaseong.

The museum organized ten workshops throughout October and provided the artists with opportunities to participate in exhibitions in two groups of five through March 2020. The artist workshops were designed to foster networks among artists from the region and to create opportunities for exchange with critics, curators, and other professionals actively working in the wider art scene.

Due to spatial limitations, the museum selected ten young artists for the current edition. As this research initiative is only taking its first steps, however, the museum hopes that its continued efforts will provide greater support for many more artists embarking on new beginnings in the future.
