KT&G Sangsangmadang has selected Gyoosik Kim, Hyoyeon Kim, and Cho Kyoungjae as the three “Artists of the Year” for the 12th KT&G SKOPF (KT&G Sangsangmadang Korean Photographer’s Fellowship), a support program for Korean photographers.

Launched in 2008, KT&G SKOPF is an annual program and one of KT&G Sangsangmadang’s flagship artist-support initiatives, dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging Korean photographers with new potential.

Following evaluation by a panel of experts, each of the three selected Artists of the Year will receive approximately KRW 15 million in support, including funding for the production of new work, as well as mentoring to provide practical assistance for their future artistic activities.

At the end of this year, the artists will participate in a portfolio review presenting the results of their work to professionals from the arts and cultural sectors and to the public, after which one artist will be selected as the final “Artist of the Year.” The final recipient will receive an additional KRW 40 million in support and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the KT&G Sangsangmadang Gallery.

In his jury statement on the selection of this year’s artists, Koo Bohnchang, chair of the jury for the 12th KT&G SKOPF, commented, “Gyoosik Kim’s work is impressive as a form of material-based investigation into the medium, in which he completes images without a camera by using light from an enlarger and forms of his own making.

Hyoyeon Kim stands out for her ability to observe and portray from diverse perspectives the lives of Korean victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and their second-generation descendants through her work highlighting victims who are gradually being forgotten.

Finally, Cho Kyoungjae constructs a kind of still life using spaces and surrounding objects and records them with a camera. I look forward to seeing how he will capture in photography the distinctive characteristics of Yeoncheon, a region adjacent to the DMZ.”

Meanwhile, KT&G Sangsangmadang is one of Korea’s leading multidisciplinary cultural and arts spaces, dedicated to discovering innovative art and culture and introducing it to the public. In addition to KT&G SKOPF, it continues to support the creative activities of artists through a range of programs encompassing various fields, including visual arts, film, performing arts, and design.
